Buyer's Guide - Best Podcasting Microphones of 2020

Nearly 15 years ago, podcasting took the world by storm. Since then, there have been many new microphones made to assist the home-podcaster in achieving professional results without spending a fortune. There are also classic microphones seen in almost every major studio that sound great for broadcasting. In this article, we have put together a list of the best microphones available in 2018 at 3 different price ranges.

High-End (Greater Than $300)

Shure SM7B - $399.00

The SM7B is now in it's third rendition. Because it is made for the modern studio to reject radio interference and reproduce any sound in an incredibly smooth fashion, this is easily the most famous broadcasting microphone. It rejects room noise unbelievably well which is why you will see it in so many broadcasts and podcast studios.

Heil PR40 - $327.00

The PR40 is another very commonly used microphone in broadcasting. It has that classic radio sound that everyone knows and loves. The model pictured above is the most affordable, however, there are a few other finishes available. You can check them out by clicking here.

Audio-Technica BP40 - $349.00

The Audio-Technica BP40 is not as common as the two listed above, but it is a very underrated microphone. It has a built-in pop filter and doesn't require as much preamp gain as other large diaphragm dynamic microphones. We took some sound samples so you can hear it for yourself!

Mid-Tier ($149-$299)

Rode Procaster - $229.00

Rode is famous for making quality microphones at affordable prices. The Australian company dipped their feet into broadcast microphones with the Procaster. The Procaster has an all metal construction which makes it a heavy duty piece of gear. More importantly, it sounds amazing! Check out this video to learn more:

Golden Age D2 - $149.99

For only $149, you will not find a better dynamic microphone for podcasting. Golden Age Project has been known for making quality gear at prices fit for a home studio. The D2 is no exception. If you are looking for a few high-quality microphones for a multi-person podcast, start off right with the D2.

Rode NT-USB - $169.00

Another Rode microphone in this tier is the NT-USB. This is a condenser, so it tends to be more sensitive than the dynamics on this list. Rode's NT-USB not only sounds great, but it's also especially useful due to being USB powered. All of these other microphones on this list so far require an audio interface whereas this one plugs right in and can translate to your DAW directly. Like all Rode microphones, this has a 10-year warranty, so you won't need to worry about the extra electronics causing problems.

Budget (Less Than $149)

AT2005 USB - $79

Another USB microphone is the AT2005 USB from Audio-Technica. Wielding the convenience of USB connectivity and a small footprint allows you to take this anywhere. The AT2005 is also a dynamic microphone which will make it much more usable in less than ideal podcasting environments.

Samson C01U Pro - $89.99

Last and certainly not least on this list, is the Samson C01U Pro. You will be hard pressed to find a better sounding USB-powered condenser microphone for under $100. This is our most common recommendation for beginning podcasters who are on a budget and are looking for the best sound they can get while they build up their gear and reputation.
