Avantone: Modern Classics

av_0027_cv12 Avantone just arrived at our back door, and we couldn't be more excited! Not only do they have some of the best sounding microphones for under $500, but also incredibly innovative studio monitors. The first microphone I looked at was the CV12, the beautiful tube microphone pictured above. I spoke into it. The smooth tube response and clearly defined top end had me in love with this mic instantly. From now on, this is my go-to vocal mic for under $500. It easily holds its own against mics that sell for three times as much. av_0023_cr14_4 This one doesn't look like much, but the dual ribbons inside of the CR14 give the most natural response of any microphone in its class. I love hearing it on guitar cabs and vocalists for the clear definition and presence and the way it handles EQ. av_0026_ck1_3 Here is the very well-crafted, CK-1, a small diaphragm condenser that includes a cardioid, hyper-cardioid, and omni pattern capsules. This is one microphone that I truly believe does not need EQ. It is one of the most concise and accurate microphones I have ever heard. An engineer could use a pair of these on anything from overheads and acoustic guitars to pianos and ensembles and never lose love for the way it captures audio. It shimmers without being brittle, and at only $149 it is a must-have for any studio. I really think it needs to be heard rather than read, so I will get some sound samples up as soon as I can. Check out our existing sound samples here! As mentioned earlier, Avantone also has released the Active MixCube. This is the active version of the original Passive MixCube. Modeled after the 5C, a very famous industry standard, Avantone has made its way into the control rooms of many of the worlds' largest studios. av_0034_mixcube_buttercream_active_3_1 The idea behind these monitors is not to be full-spectrum, but rather focus on the mid-range. Mids are the one part of a mix that usually transfers itself on all listening platforms. Listening to mixes through these monitors tends to give a "lo-fi" feel, but in reality, it can keep a mix engineer aware of what needs to be fixed in the mix. That is precisely why these have become so widely used in prestigious studios. If you like what you read, feel free to check out our other articles here!
